The Lensman Series

Triplanetary by E.E. 'Doc' Smith.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

Two omni-powerful races exist alone in the universe, both know other races will emerge and both are concerned with them.

Arisians, benevolent humanoids who wish to watch, study and protect all new species, their main worry is the effect of the Eddoreans upon them.

Eddoreans, amorphous, malevolent beings whose only concern is how to subjugate and utilize these new species.

Upon contact with the Arisians the Eddoreans are made to forget their meeting by the combined will of the Arisians. The Arisian aim is to allow the new species to develop and grow to strength in order to defend themselves from the Eddoreans plans.

The Eddoreans now believing themselves the lone power in the universe take the form of these species as they appear, and from within their cultures and society cause the species to cause their own self destruction. The Arisians have been protecting as they can, subtly they have been attempting to thwart the Eddorean member whose responsibility is that of a new species evolving upon a small planet called Earth. Throughout Earth's history the Eddorean, Gharlane, poses as great leaders and time and again sets in motion the events which lead to that civilizations demise.

When in earth's history Humans have advanced to the point of space travel, believed Space Pirates are attacking ships passing through the space lanes. At one such attack upon the cruiser Hyperion, a Special Services operative, Conway Costigan, discovers it is in fact not pirates but the controller of a vast planetoid craft, invisible from detection, except to the latest, new technological breakthrough of the special Services equipment.

Costigan discovers it's controller, Roger is conducting research upon Humans and after an escape from Roger's clutches, sends a distress signal and information on the strange technologies found on Roger's planetoid to the Special Services.

A Special Services fleet is assembled to destroy Roger's planetoid. Before Roger, who is in fact Gharlane of Eddore, can re-capture Costigan and the other escapees, a new species arrives in Earth space, to take iron from whom they consider to be a primitive species. These Nevians, an aquatic, quadruped race of technologically advanced beings, destroy the Special Services Fleet, and aid in destroying Roger's planetoid, along with another, whom roger cannot quite detect, but suspects are of immense power similar to the Eddoreans. the Nevians take the 'scientific specimens' of Costigan, Clio, a lady from the attacked ship Hyperion, and the Hyperion's Captain Bradley.

Recoiling from the destruction the Special Services analyze and with the data gathered from the planetoid, and the information that Costigan sent before his capture, they complete the Super Ship, capable of inertia-less travel, at almost instantaneous speeds.

Gharlane of Eddore has also escaped from the destroyed planetoid along with some of his scientists, and has to find a new planet on which to begin his schemes anew. However Gharlane is troubled by the 'other' being who he felt helped destroy his planetoid. Eventually he recalls the first meeting between Eddoreans and the Arisians.

Attempts by Costigan to escape the clutches of the Nevians are futile as the Nevian, Nerado recaptures them several times. During this time as captors Costigan and Clio fall in love.

Back on Earth the Super Ship is completed and tested, it soon finds itself defending the Earth from another Nevian craft, eventually causing it to flee, but not before it has completely destroyed Pittsburgh.

Costigan eventually escapes along with his loved one Clio and the good Captain Bradley, but in the process poisons hundreds of Nevians and destroys a large part of a city to do so. Pursued by Nerado, Costigan is suddenly aware of another Nevian craft heading him off, it is the fleeing Nevian ship from Earth, expecting re-capture Costigan and friends are rescued by the Super Ship, which then attacks and destroys the fleeing Nevian ship. The Super Ship then tackles Nerado's craft but it is a stalemate. Changing their mission they head to Nevia, the Nevian homeworld and there destroy a whole city and its main defenses. they then wait for Nerado to reappear and consider other options. An agreement is made between both species, as otherwise only the complete destruction of both Nevia and Earth would result in a continued war. A treaty is signed and cooperative relations begin between the two planets.

While returning to Earth the Super Ship detects Gharlane's new planet and after an ultimatum to surrender a space battle is begun between Gharlane and the Super Ship. The Super Ship's new weaponry however, are greater then Gharlane imagined and his craft and physical body are destroyed, along with the scientists still helping him. Gharlane's non-physical being is however returned to Eddore, his homeworld. there on Eddore the Eddoreans discuss the Arisians and begin plans to overcome this set-back and become complete rulers of the universe.
