LIGHTNING STREAK

Kalidorth Gishdowl

This is an offensive Manc of some power and dramatic effect. From the Mancer or item issues a flash of lightning that streaks instantly to its target and hits with the force of an exploding lightning strike. If Slow was cast upon the streak, it would still move faster than most could leap out of the way, but some may just see the trail of crackling silver-white energy, like a silver comet, hurtling towards its target unerring accuracy. As long as nothing passes in its path during the split-moment it takes to get to its target Lightning Streak does not miss. It will not deviate its course to avoid obstacles and so the suer should be very careful as to their targets, especially if they are moving very quickly.

As its strikes, Lightning Streak shocks, burns, and explodes on contact. Most materials are heavily damaged in this way. Walls will have chunks of stone blown away and a blackened area around the blast point. Wooden doors may be either blown apart, or else partly destroyed and burned considerably. Metal is often buckled with the force and heat of the strike. Flesh suffers more than most for it is scattered and torn from its host, with much being burnt and sizzled by the shock and heat. Cloth almost always ignites unless very wet beforehand. Manc Metal and the Manc barriers offer resistance to the streak, but still feel the concussive force and may be blackened with soot or some other residue from contact.

As already stated it would be very difficult to cast Slow upon a Lightning Streak, but not impossible. Slow would indeed slow it to perhaps that of a flying bird, or a thrown axe. The streak itself would be too bright for many to perceive, and it may be only at this time the Banish Manc could negate it completely. Restoration, Darkness, or Alter form have no effect upon the streak, as it has no real solid matter, but is intense shocking, hot, light. This Manc is too instant to be dispelled by the caster.

Upon casting it manifests inches from the caster's hand or item and streaks off. There is no sensation of heat or such to the caster or user. When using the potion, ring, armlet,or the spell three or more fingers are used to conjure the streak. The rod, staff, and wand must be aimed at the target, and the scroll creates the streak before the user and flies at the user's viewed target.

Item Creation:-

The items that can store Lightning Bolt become dangerous to wield, for should any of these items become broken or destroyed then they explode. The armlet can have minor repairs to it without risk but a bad tear will constitute its destruction.

The staff can be any hard wood cut from a tree that has been struck by lightning. It must have the symbol of lightning carved or otherwise marked upon it. The staff may be shod in silver or have a silver emblem embedded in it.

The wand, if made from wood from a tree struck by lightning lowers the Power by 1, or any wood will do. Any other material increases the Power by 1. The wand should be fashioned and frequently rubbed with wood ash and quicksilver. When performing the chant the wand should be laid on a bed of wood ash. The wand must have the lightning symbol engraved or otherwise marked upon it. Removing this mark without damaging the wand removes the Manc of Lightning Streak from the wand. Destroying the wand may cause an explosion.

The ring must have silver in its construction and if it has the symbol of lightning the Charges are increased by 1. The ring is buried in wood ash for the duration of the chant and then washed in clean rain water while repeating the chant. It should then be dried with a clean cloth of white or silver.

The Potion and scroll begin the same way, with clean storm water being chanted over and then quicksilver, chalk, and wood ash being mixed into create a watery mud. Here the two items take different paths. The potion is strained, more water added and the chant repeated. This is repeated until the water is free of debris and turned a white colour. This is then gently simmered until it is reduced to an amount to fit into a potion flask. Once in the flask it is usually sealed with a stopper marked with the symbol of lightning, but this is not essential. For the scroll, the watery mud is reduced over heat and the scroll prepared by dusting with wood ash and then rubbing with chalk dust. The scroll has the chant said over it and then once the liquid is reduced it is mixed with powdered tarse leaves and made into an ink with milk. The writing is performed with the white ink, but as it dries it turns dark grey. A last repeated chant and the scroll is ready.

The armlet needs the a silver adornment, embroidery in silver thread, or part of the stitching in silver thread. The symbol for lightning is commonly used but not essential. The armlet may be armoured, cloth, or plant matter, but must be at least to mid-forearm in length. Soaked in rain from a thunderstorm (which may be collected and used before the next storm, or before two Pentawaeks have passed), then it is dried over a hot fire.

Imbuing the Spell requires an Üolarm with 3 wooden candlesticks holding silver candles at least 8 inches long. A silver needle needs to pierce a palm of the creator after the item creation chant (with the .... being replaced with the word Slek) and the blood touched to the candles before they have melted half way. This is followed by meditation for a Passage in darkness (Darkness Manc will suffice) with the eyes closed tightly or a blindfold, and the creator must concentrate upon the flashes of light in their mind's eye. The sound of a storm overhead lowers the Power of the Manc by 1 or 2 Levels depending upon the ferocity of the storm. Once the meditation has ended, the Mancer needs their whole body to be washed in cold water, scrubbed with light-coloured sand or vigorous brushing with a stiff brush, then the modified chant must be repeated.

Any metal will do for the rod, but silver is preferable and if completely silver lowers the Power by 1. The symbol of lightning must be engraved or marked upon it in the upper half. Removal of this mark causes the destruction of the rod and a likely explosion too. The rod must be then buried in wood ash of at least one pound in weight. Up to an extra two Power Levels can be lowered with each extra 20 lbs. of lightning-struck wood ash (a maximum of 40lbs.of ash). It must be buried for 3 Passages and then washed down in clean, cold water or light-coloured sand. Wearing a silver-threaded cloth of at least five feet in length, and three feet from the rod, while performing the chants, gives the rod the ability to absorb any Lightning Streak cast towards the wielder. When catching a Lightning Streak in this way, the streak is dispelled and lost, it can not be thrown back.
