The differing kinds of armour fall into broad categories. These are listed below, along with the cost and weight. Each item is linked further information. Entries in Blue are from the Player's Handbook, entries in mauve are from Dragon Magazine, entries in maroon are from Dungeon Magazine and entries in light green are my own creation.

Weight: figures are for armour to fit Medium sized characters. Armour fitted for Small characters weighs half as much and armour fitted for Large characters weighs twice as much.
Running: When running in heavy armour, you move only triple your speed, not quadruple.
Cover: a tower shield can instead grant you cover.
Hand: hand is not free to cast spells.
